Principal's Message
2020-2021 ADVENTURE
Welcome to another new school year, the school year of "adventure". There have been some changes how we operate and move within the school to address the School's Health and Safety Operational Plans; such as a focus on hand hygiene, social distancing, and classroom bubbles/cohorts, etc. An important message is that we need to work together, both home and school collaboratively to thrive as we embark on this adventure.
Learning should be fun and free of "COVID fear" within the building for our students.. As a staff we are making that a priority this school year of adventure to keep the learning engaging and flexible. There will be bumpy moments as we learn new routines and responsibilities, and these bumps will be addressed with love. We ask for patience, flexibility and understanding from our parents and guardians, and we understand and recognize the collective struggles parents are facing as our staff also have children attending Yukon Schools.
As a school community we have both "rights and responsibilities" and what follows our "rights and responsibilities" are consequences of choice. We choose to keep each other safe and healthy in this building by following the COVID recommendations and requirements laid out for the staff and students of GTC and will take special circumstances/needs into account and use a "trauma-informed lens" when dealing with the consequences of choice. The main consequence of choice will be that a student may need to stay home or need to go home in order to keep our school community safe. If a child is sick and comes to school, we will be asking that the parent come and pick up their child. If a child struggles with following the Heath and Safety guidelines, the parent or guardian will be called to come and take their child home from the school.
We can do this together, I believe this strongly in my heart. Together we will thrive on this adventure. We will treat each other with kindness, using kind words even when we are upset or stressed. We will show patience as we learn new routines. We will show compassion when we become overwhelmed with it all. We will show love as we protect and care for one another.
As new cases emerge in Yukon it is our responsibility to be vigilant with our physical distancing, hand washing and wearing of a mask. Our Operational Plan will change as Yukon's circumstance changes and we move from "RECOMMEDED" to "REQUIRED". The staff, School Council and C/TFN don't want COVID safety protocols and rules to become a battle of obedience, but of acceptance that we need to do things differently for everyone. We may need to have a "tougher love" approach going forward to protect our way of life-celebrations and family gatherings.
